How it works

Formula

Add VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, total = net + VAT Remove VAT: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), VAT = total − net

Rates shown are standard rates as of October 2026. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, so check with the tax authority for your case.

Worked example

  • Add 5% UAE VAT to 200: VAT = 200 × 5 ÷ 100 = 10, total = 210
  • Remove 5% VAT from 210: net = 210 ÷ 1.05 = 200, VAT = 10

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I remove VAT by subtracting 5% of the total?

Because VAT is charged on the net price, not the total. 5% of 210 is 10.50, which is too much. Divide by 1.05 instead: 210 ÷ 1.05 = 200.

What are the VAT rates in the Gulf?

Standard rates are 5% in the UAE and Oman, 10% in Bahrain and 15% in Saudi Arabia. Qatar and Kuwait do not currently have VAT.

Is the rate always the standard one?

No. Many countries have reduced, zero or exempt rates for items such as basic food, healthcare or exports. Use the custom rate for those.
